We've arrived. Election day is tomorrow, and somehow, I'm not the nervous wreck I thought I'd be. I recognize that we’re all dealing with things in our own way, and I want to start by saying, please take care of yourself this week.
Have grace for yourself and if you do nothing else, care for you, you deserve it. - Me to you
That said, I've been thinking of ways to relax and maintain a sense of calm without increasing my THC intake. For me, this means using more CBD and spending more time caring for my body. Some activities I'm considering incorporating into this election week are:
Taking hot baths with infused products
I haven't tried this Epsom salt yet, but I may scoop some from the dispensary for the occasion. I may go extra hard in the gym today in preparation for the relaxing bath to come.
Scrubbing and moisturizing
I don't have any infused skin/body care products, but I'll be doing a body scrub and moisturizing with some of my more luxe body butters.
Drinking tea
I’ve been enjoying adding my tincture to hot tea. The orange and mint flavors lend themselves well to blending with tea.
You can also buy infused tea, which I haven't tried, but I've been eyeing. Adjourn is a Black-woman-owned tea company. I've tried their chai blend and highly recommend it.
Smoking CBD flower
I enjoy See Fenix's CBD flower. I started with a preroll and was so impressed that I ordered a few different cultivars (strains). I really couldn't believe how fast and relaxing the effects were. My faves are Sour Space Candy and Blueberry Muffin.
Plain Jane is a popular brand that I haven't tried but have heard good things about.
Taking CBD dabs
This one is for my experienced smokers; since dabbing isn't great for beginners. I'm down to the last corner of the CBD concentrate I picked up in Detroit, so I may try a few crumbles from Extract Labs. I enjoy dabbing CBD because the effects are immediate, and you still get the flavor of terpenes.
CBD Skeptic?
If you're anything like me, you may be skeptical of CBD. I, too, was a CBD skeptic until a few months ago when I got to try and review 20+ CBD products. Not all CBD products are created equal, especially the ones you see at convenience stores. Many are produced by companies trying to capitalize on the "green rush" and aren't made with our best interest in mind. Studies have shown there are often discrepancies between the CBD levels brands advertise and what lab tests show. It's safe to say that we should always be vigilant when shopping for cannabis products, especially CBD. Here are some things to look out for when shopping for CBD:
Full-spectrum vs. broad spectrum
Full-spectrum, or whole-plant CBD oil, includes CBD, terpenes, other cannabinoids, and no more than 0.3% THC. These products are often more effective because even the trace amounts of THC synergize with CBD, known as the entourage effect.
Broad-spectrum oil contains a similar range of cannabinoids but without any THC.
Is it hemp-derived or hemp Oil?
Products claiming to contain hemp or hemp seed oil aren't the same as hemp-derived CBD oil. Hemp oil and hemp seed oil often don't contain CBD, so steer clear of these.
Is there a lab report?
Many brands put a certificate of analysis (COA), or lab report, on their site, so if you can't find it, you should feel comfortable asking for it. If they can't provide it, it's probably not a product you want to try.
New to CBD? Here are some general tips for getting started:
Combine CBD with THC. They work better together, so aim for full-spectrum products if you’re comfortable.
Consistency is key; if you don't feel a change after a few days, increase your dose, but give it time. Our bodies are different, and thus so is our needed dose. Start with what’s recommended on the bottle, and if you don’t feel a change, increase slowly. I aim for 40mg/dose of CBD and sometimes more depending on how anxious I am.
The Roll Up
Check out my first Ask a Budtender column in Chicago Magazine.
I demo how I make wax infused joints.
A cultivar review on a stinky lil’ thang, Meat Breath.
My double bowl from Elevate Jane, in all it’s glory.
I tried a new review style, featuring Tangerine Dream.
Letting things go…Up in Smoke.
I got a reading last week, and it was everything I needed. One of the many revelations I had during the call was that I mishandle my embarrassment. Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with being embarrassed. My challenge is that I try to beat other people to the punch by making fun of myself rather than accepting my embarrassment.
It was funny to learn this about myself just two days after I cried on IG live and proceeded to tell anyone who would listen how embarrassed I was. I reflected a bit and realized that I’m usually embarrassed because I’m publicly expressing emotion, which I shouldn't be embarrassed about. This one will be hard to do, but I’m committed to working on it. I am very silly, and that’s what most people see, but I feel very deeply (👋🏾 hey fellow empaths), which almost always manifests as crying, even when I’m happy. That’s just who I am, and while I dislike it about myself, I’m going to work on really embracing it.
Yours in self-care,
D
Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a chemical compound found in the hemp plant. It has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its potential therapeutic and health benefits. In this article, we will discuss some of the potential benefits of CBD.
First and foremost, CBD has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to reduce the symptoms of inflammation-related illnesses such as arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Studies have also suggested that CBD may be effective in treating chronic pain, anxiety, and depression.
Additionally, CBD has been found to have strong antioxidant properties, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. This can help reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Finally, CBD has been found to have neuroprotective properties, which can help protect the brain from damage caused by trauma or disease. This could be beneficial for treating conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Without a doubt! And smoking is by and large the most popular method of consuming CBD flower. Whether you have been smoking weed of all kinds for years or are just getting started in the wonderful world of cannabis, it doesn’t matter. Smoking hemp is simple, effective, and there’s so many ways to do it.
Combusting plant matter and inhaling it deep into your lungs is something that takes time and experience to get used to. But it is instantly effective. Within mere seconds, the calming properties of CBD, CBG and so many other compounds should wash over you.
A distinct taste comes with smoking CBD flower, thanks to each strain’s specific— and different— terpene and flavor profile. If it’s your first time smoking, you could cough or experience ‘harsh’ sensation in your throat. These are both common side effects of smoking anything and will dissipate in likelihood and severity as you continue to inhale hemp flower.
