Highya! We’re just three weeks away from the 2020 election, and I can feel my nerves and anxiety creeping in. 2016 was a wake-up call for me and everyone else obvi, and it made me take my political awareness much more seriously. Since then, I’d say I’ve turned into a bit of a politics junkie. I listen to politics podcasts multiple times a day, donate to campaigns I believe in, and try to be an informed citizen. I also try to be an informed cannabis consumer, so it felt right to acknowledge the timely intersection of the two.
Cannabis is on the ballot in many states this year, and though legalization is often only a half-step towards undoing the injustice and harm (still being) done to the Black community, because of the war on drugs and the disproportionate arrests of Black people for cannabis offenses, its a half step that needs to be taken nationwide.
I wasn't surprised to see that so few of these states included plans for how they'll expunge records and free people who are still locked up because of a plant their state now stands to make millions from. If my home state's, Illinois, social equity license rollout is an example of what these states will be like, we're in for an uphill battle. We have to keep rallying for the rights of those more marginalized than us, and being aware of what's happening around us is the first step.
So, let’s get into which states have measures on their ballots:
The Roll Up
I took a break from Instagram to brainstorm and elevate 😉 my content. The Roll Up will be back with some cool content in the next edition.
Letting things go…Up in Smoke.
I’ve always been bad at saying no, and as a result, I end up in countless situations I don’t want to be in. This week I said no to an opportunity that I really didn’t want to say no to and was shocked at myself. I said no because I had other work to do and knew it wouldn’t be good for my anxiety. I felt sad about it, but I was proud that I’d done the right thing FOR ME. Shortly after sending my “no” email, I got a reply asking what deadline would work for me. I was shocked. Standing up for myself worked out in my favor. I ended up saying yes to the opportunity, but on terms that worked better for me. This week I’m letting go of feeling bad for saying no.
What are you letting go of?
As always, I'd love to hear from you. If you read something that you want to know more about or have a question, hit that reply button and let me know.
Cheers,
